They are ideal for experienced treasure hunters who are looking to detect deep targets. PI detectors are not as effective at detecting smaller objects, such as coins and jewelry.


·        BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillation) Detectors: BFO detectors are similar to VLF detectors, but they use a different technology to detect metal. They are ideal for detecting all types of metals, including coins, jewelry, and relics. BFO detectors are a great option for those who are just starting out or for those who want to upgrade from a VLF detector.


·        Multi-Frequency Detectors: Multi-frequency detectors are the most advanced type of metal detectors and are designed to detect all types of metals, including coins, jewelry, relics, and more. They are ideal for experienced treasure hunters who want to detect the deepest targets.


How Metal Detectors Work

Metal detectors work by emitting an electromagnetic field and detecting changes in the field caused by the presence of metal. The strength of the signal indicates the size and depth of the metal object.


Factors to Consider When Choosing a Metal Detector

·        Budget: The cost of metal detectors can range from under $100 to several thousand dollars. It is essential to choose a detector that fits your budget, but also consider factors such as quality and performance.


·        Purpose: Consider what you will be using your metal detector for and choose one that is suitable for your needs. For example, if you plan to hunt for relics, a PI detector may be a better choice than a VLF detector.


·        Location: The location you plan to use your metal detector will affect the type of detector you choose. For example, if you plan to use your detector on the beach, a waterproof detector may be necessary.


·        Experience: Consider your level of experience when choosing a metal detector. If you are a beginner, a VLF detector may be a better choice than a multi-frequency detector.


Lastly there has been so much advanced in technology and in compaction among manufactures that you can get into a great machine for less that $300.00 now days.


I would highly recommend this starting out. Frankly I see very little need for you to spend much more than that until you get a lot of experience. Then if you desire to stay in the hobby you can very easily sell your old one and upgrade.


A Side Note: A lot of us old timers like to keep at least one generation of detector around just in case the new fangled gizmo breaks or other disasters happen.
